When you hear the phrase, “women in politics,” what do you think? For me, not much thinking was done to answer that question. There simply aren’t that many. The upcoming 2016 presidential election holds more women than have ever been running: 8 females. Out of 104 candidates. That’s about 7.7%. Why are only 7.7% of candidates female, but we live in a 50/50 population ratio? What emphasizes the male dominance in politics?
An article written by the Huffington Post in 2014 states some of the reasons this may be. The article touches on many different points, but, basically, they think and are told that they just aren’t good enough. Lawless states that, “women perform just as well on Election day, they’re able to raise just as much money, and generally speaking, their media coverage looks very much the same… [However], they believe they’re not qualified because they think women have to be twice as good to get half as far.”
All in all, there really isn’t any viable reason why women aren’t a prominent part of our justice system, we just need to stop discouraging them to pursue their passions.
