Por Qué Español?
Why Spanish?
Besides wanting to be able to hold my own when I have to speak Spanish for a job, travel, or just a conversation, learning to speak Spanish and learning about the culture has many other benefits. For example, an article written by Yudhijit Bhattacharjee titled, “Why Bilinguals are smarter,” notes that, “being bilingual, it turns out, makes you smarter. It can have a profound effect on your brain, improving cognitive skills not related to language, and even shielding against dementia in old age.” Another article, “Some Side Benefits of Learning both a Foreign Language and a Foreign Culture,” written by Capt. Mark Jacobsen, talks about how learning a foreign language and foreign culture makes you more aware of your own language and lets you see life through a different lens. The positive statistics go on and on, but the point is this: If learning another language and culture has so many benefits, why wouldn't you want to learn?
