Monkey Meal Planning Project
The monkey meal planning project is designed to create a class cookbook for monkeys, chimpanzees, and apes at a primate rescue center in Lexington, Kentucky. These animals are often given the same meals, and it was our job to create meals that fulfill the requirements for a healthy diet as well as make an interesting meal for the primates. The challenging part of this project was finding the right proportions. There are only a certain amount of foods the primates can consume, and only a certain amount of processed carbohydrates, natural carbohydrates, sugar, processed fat, and natural fat they can take in per meal. Finding a balance between all the constraints was difficult enough, but on top of that I completed a challenge extension targeting my meal to Irritable Bowl Syndrome (IBS) monkeys. Essentially, this challenge extension limits some of the food options available, and confines the constraints even more.
This project was challenging because of the constraints we had to abide by, all the while creating a meal plan that does not taste like dirt. In the end, when all constraints had been met, the final recipe is something I am proud of and that, hopefully, the IBS monkeys will enjoy.
