Dissection Project: The Spiny Dogfish Shark
Every high-school graduate most likely knows the struggle or success of dismembering a dead organism, and this year it was my turn to go down that formaldehyde-ridden road. We had the choice between dissecting a cat, fetal pig, or shark. I chose to dissect a Spiny Dogfish Shark and learn about the differences between marine animals and humans.
Through this dissection, we thoroughly investigating the anatomy of a Spiny Dogfish Shark, and how each part works to make the shark more efficient, and how it has adapted to its surroundings. We explored the digestive, circulatory, reproductive, and urinary systems and how they compare to that of a humans. Did you know this species gets its name because they travel in packs just like dogs? Did you know this species obtain spiracles, so they can breathe while not moving? All these things I learned through this dissection project, but I also learned so much more. I learned that every attribute on every species serves a purpose, and that each species have different mechanisms that help it succeed.
Though the smell of these dead organisms made me gag, I'm glad I muddled through in order to learn the importance of different species, and the attributes that set us apart.
