Street Law Mini-Project
Essential Question: “How do we balance the need for personal privacy with the need to keep a safe, orderly, and just society?”
This mini-project focused on learning about the 4th amendment and when authorities have the right to search and seize. An emphasis was also put on learning about reasonable suspicion, probable cause, and the difference between the two. To understand these concepts, we analyzed previous court cases, researched articles on student’s rights in school, and had police officers come in and discuss protocols for different scenarios. After that, we put that knowledge to use by creating a project displaying what we’d learned to what most fascinated us.
I was interested in smartphone rights in school, so I got together with a couple other people with similar interests and we made a flowchart (as depicted below) in an attempt to educate other student’s on whether or not their rights were being violated by teachers actions, regarding phone usage. This topic interested me because search and seizure of phones in general has always a bit of a gray area, and since the rules are different when you are in school, I thought it would be an interesting topic to look into. Also, I feel it's important that student realize their rights in school are different that outside of school, and I felt it was necessary to unveil that.
