This article, written by John Whitehead of the Huffington Post, exemplifies the reasoning our government may have turned tyrannical. Whitehead states that the tyranny of the Nanny State is “marketed as benevolence, enforced with armed police, and inflicted on all those who do not belong to the elite ruling class that gets to call the shots.” The government thinks they know best, and Whitehead believes this tyrannical state is cause for the drastic punishments for seemingly innocent crimes. For example, letting your child ride a bike around the neighborhood without the parent’s supervision can subject the parent to being arrested and charged with child endangerment.
Whitehead also mentions that “once a free people allows the government inroads into their freedoms or uses those same freedoms as bargaining chips for security, it quickly becomes a slippery slope to outright tyranny,” continuing to say that we have, “allowed ourselves to be bridled and turned into slaves at the bidding of a government that cares little for our freedoms or our happiness.” Whitehead believes that since we have already allowed the government into our freedoms, they will continue to trample our rights until all our actions have been criminalized.
From my perspective, it seems we are in desperate need of a compromise. Yes, I can understand how some government laws are unjust and do not play towards the betterment of society, but at the same time, the government has a more educated profile on situations than we do, making them the most reliable force in decision making. If we look at the big picture, the government has a broader perspective on the situations, and is ultimately who we should trust in law making. If they don’t make these rules, who else would be qualified to do so?
