This debate covers six main topics: immigration, foreign policy, climate change, economy, education, and abortion. Of these, I’d like to focus on abortion because there seems to always be a missing common ground on this topic. There are also many factors to one’s opinion, such as when the abortion would take place, under what circumstances, and what the tissue would be used for (if anything). Also, you must face answering if Planned Parenthood would support it and when tissue becomes life.
Focusing on Ben Carson for his thoughts on abortion seem to be a reasonable choice because he is a retired neurosurgeon and knows a great deal about the medical field. He can also provide insight on the more medical side instead of the emotional side. In all, Carson believes abortion should be banned after the 20 week mark after fertilization, and strongly believes abortions should never be used for convenience. In 2014, Carson stated that, “my entire professional life has been devoted to saving and enhancing lives. Thus, the thought of abortion for the sake of convenience does not appeal to me. Many of us turn a blind eye to the wanton slaughter of millions of helpless human babies who are much more sophisticated that some of the other creatures, when nothing is at stake other than the convenience of one or both parents. I am not saying that we should abandon our efforts to save baby seals and a host of other animals. Rather I am saying shouldn’t we consider adding human fetuses and babies to the list?”
I think that this opinion is very well developed and easy to get on board with. The way he compares fetuses as lower in importance than small animals is a powerful argument and helped me understand his perspective more. However, I didn’t see a whole lot of information on his opinion regarding cases of rape, incest, or exceptional cases. I feel that area is important to touch upon in order to give a well-rounded argument. Besides that small information gap, I think Carson’s opinion on abortion is strong and agreeable.
