Today was a surgery day, and my final day of my internship. Even though we had more surgeries today, it didn't take as long because it mostly consisted of small surgeries.
Today I saw...
-A ligament reattached to the ankle from an ankle sprain that never healed
-2 carpal tunnel releases
-Trigger finger pulley release (same idea as carpal tunnel, both take around 7 minutes to complete)
-Screw put in to stabilize a foot fracture (A.K.A a Jone's fracture)
-Cyst removal and nerve reconstruction
~This patient had a heavy object fall on a part of his hand a few months ago, and developed a cyst. Now, he has limited feeling on the top of his hand because of the injury. Dr. Butzen cut out the messed up part of the nerve, then used a part of the patients vein as a nerve graft and sewed it all back together. This was my favorite surgery to watch because they were able to hook up the microscope to a monitor so I could see what they were seeing, and it was awesome.
Fun fact: Always be alert when teenage boys wake up because they will awaken fighting. The anesthesiologist compared waking them up to trying to wrestle a swordfish. I agree.
I ended the day by saying goodbye to everyone I'd met in the surgical area, E.R., and clinic, and of course saying thank you to Dr. Butzen.
