Today was only a partial day because my mentor had to rush into a surgery for a badly infected dog and cat bite.
I viewed:
-An infection in the knee, which was treated with surgery and is now improving
-Chunks of bone separated from the thumb
-Post-op on an ankle and knee hardware removal
-An ankle casting
-Carpal tunnel and arthritic bone post-op, one week later the patient is almost fully recovered
-Crushed ankle post-op from an avalanche accident
-Carpal tunnel pre-op
-An undiagnosed wrist injury in a volleyball player
My day was then cut short as Dr.Butzen attended to an intense infection needing immediate surgery. The patient received this injury by breaking up an animal fight.
Did you know...
-An arthrogram is when dye is injected into an injured area so the MRI comes out clearer
-Decomposable stitches are fantastic, but are unusable if the wound is under a lot of pressure or tension.
-Removing hardware has a very fast recovery time
-A carpal tunnel release only takes about 5 min., and recovery time can be as little as one week.
-If a skin infection is left untreated, it eventually makes its way into the bone, and won't heal on its own.
-If carpal tunnel is left untreated, permanent nerve damage will occur and sensation in fingers may never return.
